The new IBM SureMark Printers offer:
Key PrerequisitesElectronic journaling software is required.Printers attach to IBM 4683, 4693, 4694,4695, SurePOS 700 Series, SurePOS 500 Series and the IBM POS I/OAttachment Kit
RPQ 8Q1238.
They will also attach to RS-232 and USB ports on non-IBMPOS terminals or PCs.
DescriptionHigh-powered POS performance
These quiet, high-quality thermal receipt printers set a newstandard for speed, delivering up to 52 lps for SBCS output and up to50 lps for DBCS printing.Retailers can completetransactions more quickly, as well as print logos, coupons andmarketing messages on receipts -- in black or an accent colour --making the POS printera valuable marketing tool. Logo andbarcode data stored in flash memory can minimize print time. For retailers who need additional memory for failsafe journal storage,an optional2 MB is available for some models via a request forprice quotation (RPQ).
TrueType and scalable fonts
SureMark Printers are the only receipt printers available todaywith TrueType font support--or 'newspaper style' printing. This increases readability dramatically and creates a host ofopportunities for printing longer, more engaging customer messages onreceipts. With scalable fonts, characters can be printed up to eighttimes their standard size for a bold,attention-gettinglook.
Colour thermal printing
Customers remember messages printed in colour far better than thoseprinted in black. To take advantage of that fact, all SureMark Printerscanprint on thermal papers that provide one additional accent colour, such as red or blue (with a free firmware upgrade). The accent colouris usedto highlight promotional messages, total savings, loyalty pointsand other special information.
Single-pass check handling
Model TI4 can perform single-pass check handling in 14 seconds witha single printhead, unlike other devices thatmust use multipleprintheadsand ribbons to process the check. Conventional MICR reading, checkendorsing and printing are available as well.(For check handlingwithout MICR reading or check flipping, choose Model TI3 or TI5.)
One global solution
International and global retailers can use SureMark Printers as asingle worldwide printer platform to improve service and supportefficiency. These printers are available in a wide range of models,so multinational retailers can select the right model for eachgeography in which they do business.Since applicationinterfaces aresimilar for all models, retailers canupgrade installedprinters easilywith the latest functions, such as colour thermal paperprinting or PDF-417 barcodes.
Compact, easy-to-use design
With some of the smallest footprints in their class, SureMarkPrinters give you maximum counter space. Single-station modelsoffer wall-mounting with upside-down printing, so receipts stayright-side up as they exit wall-mounted printers. Simple paperhandling makes refills quick and easy. For some models,90-mm diameterpaper rolls are available to minimize paper reloading.
Flexible options to protect your investment
SureMark Printers work with a variety of POS hardware, includingmany non-IBM systems. They support USB and RS-485/RS-232 viamodular adapters, so you canupgrade these printerseasily if yourhardware configuration changes. Select the interface that bestsupports your current hardware investment, thenmigrate at your own paceto new platforms such as the IBM SurePOS 700 Series with USBconnectivity.
Models TM6 and TF6 offer transparent emulation for Epson TM-T88IIprinters, which makes porting applications easy. These models provideemulation for the receipt station of IBM Model 3/Model 4 Printers, while Models TI3 and TI4 provide emulation for both the receiptand document insert stations.
Customers in Asia Pacificmarkets where Double-Byte character sets are printed canuse existing applications withThese models allow retailers to switch between DBCS mode and SBCS modeelectronically, with no mechanical adjustments. In SBCS mode,
Multiple printer models supporting many market segments
Models TI3 and TI4 are well suited for customers who requireboth receipt printing and document printing. Customers who expectto print checks will benefit from the single-pass check handlingfeature that is standard on Model TI4. Customers in Asia Pacificmarkets where Double-Byte character sets are printed will want toorder Model TI5.
Models TM6 and TM7 single-station thermal printers are ideal forany retailer who doesnot accept checks. These quiet, high-qualitythermal receipt printers deliver the same speed as the populardual-station models: up to 52 lps for SBCS output (TM6) and 50 lpsfor DBCS output (TM7). They also offer the same modular interfaceadapters, so customers can choose RS-232 or RS-485 connectivity nowand move to USB at their own pace.
Models TF6 and TF7 single-station thermal printers deliver theexact same power and performance as models TM6 and TM7 - plus allmodels include special features designed exclusively for foodservice and hospitality. They can be wall-mounted, with anupside-down printing feature that keeps receipts right-side up asthey exit the printer. They have an audible alarm for kitchen usage, and they are spill-resistant. The primary difference between ModelsTF6 and TF7 when compared to Models TM6 and TM7 is the cover colour. The TFx models are a dark grey colour to match the SurePOS 500 Series, while the TMx models are pearl white, to match the SurePOS 700Series and 4694.

Product PositioningThe SureMark Printers are designed for retailers whohave implemented or plan to implement electronic journaling. There is no physical journal station in these printers. They are targeted to image-conscious retailers who requirequiet printing at the front end of the store and need fastertransaction times at the POS register. These printers willalso appeal to retailers who wish to take advantage of anopportunity to market to their customers by using the printer'sstored image capability for printing colour coupons andproduct logos. The models 3, 3R, 4 and model 4R printers and printers meetingfiscal requirements will continue to be available forretailers who continue to use paper journals, require 86column document insert or must meet governmental fiscalrequirements.PublicationsThe User's Guidewill beshipped with the printer if feature number 9521is specified.

The IBM SureMark Printers have the capability to receive 4610firmware updates from the host system unit to which they are attachedfor either RS485 (cable #7) attached or RS232 attached 4610 printers.
The followingmediums can be used to update the 4610 firmware:
The SureMark printer Models TM6, TM7, TF6 and TF7 use the same RS-485interface as Model 3 and 4 printers.
The program interface is changed from that of the previousprinters.
Limitations
Because there is no physical journal station on the SureMarkprinters,an electronic journaling application is required.Electronic Journaling eliminates the need to store paper journaltapes and the time-consuming task of searching paper tapes should theneed arise.
Sources of electromagnetic noise (i.e. displays, security towers, etc.) can interfere with the MICR read head on Models TI4.The printer is equipped tofilter the noise from many but not all devices. If the MICR readerdoes not function properly, rearranging the printer relative to thedevice may improve the MICR reading. The noise source should belocated as far as possible away from the right side of the printer.
4690 OS V2R4 will support the same functions available on thecurrent SureMark printers. In future releases of 4690 OS and itsassociated applications, many of the new advanced features of theSureMark Printers, like colour printing, will be fully supported.
